- Biofuels, simply put, are fuels that are
produced from plant or animal material, such as agricultural crops, wood,
organic waste, etc.
- Biofuels are mostly used to power our
transport (transportation fuels), even though they have utility in many
other applications.
- Two main types of biofuels are common: ethanol
and biodiesel.
- Ethanol is a type of
biofuel produced by the fermentation of starch-heavy crops such as corn,
cassava, sugar cane, and wheat amongst others. The ethanol is usually
added as an additive to gasoline or can be used in its pure form (E100)
in gasoline engine vehicles.
- Biodiesel is a type of
biofuel that is produced from vegetable oil or animal fats and lipids,
through the process of esterification. Biodiesel is usually added as an
additive to regular diesel fuel for diesel engine vehicles.
- Even though the process of biofuel production
is not usually carbon negative, biofuels are of Importance for three main
reasons:
- When added to gasoline or diesel, they help
reduce the overall amount of gasoline or diesel needed, hence reducing
the need for, and reliance on fossil fuels.
- Secondly, on average, biofuels are
cleaner burning fuels than fossil-based fuels such as gasoline, with less
carbon emissions on average.
- Lastly, biofuels are environmentally
friendly. They are not harmful to the environment and to the natural
ecosystem.
- The growth of the biofuel industry is as a
result of the push from governments and other state parastatals to adopt
this fuel as a substitute for fossil-based fuels.
